Intermediate ESL (Levels 2 and 3) Speaking Class Course Outline

 

This course is designed to provide intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) learners with the essential skills for effective spoken communication and improved fluency in everyday situations. The primary focus is on building confidence, refining pronunciation, expanding vocabulary, and engaging in conversations on a variety of topics. The program emphasizes practical language use, cultural awareness, and intermediate grammar in a dynamic and engaging way, ensuring that students are well-prepared to integrate into English-speaking communities and work environments.

Level 2 and 3:

Level 2: 
For learners to build confidence in basic conversations, expand vocabulary, and use simple and compound sentences effectively through question-and-answer practice and repetition. 

Level 3: 
For learners to engage in more detailed conversations, express ideas clearly, and use complex sentence structures with greater fluency through question-and-answer practice and forming original answers to questions.

The course content for Levels 2 and 3 remains consistent to provide a smooth transition and progressive learning. This ensures learners can develop their speaking, listening, and conversational skills effectively.

Weekly Course Outline

Week 1: Basics and Introduction
Learning Outcome:

Students will confidently introduce themselves, state their personal information, and use the English alphabet to spell their names and identify common items.

Week 2: Everyday Essentials
Learning Outcome:

Students will be able to greet others, express their feelings, discuss the weather, and talk about the days and months of the year in conversation.

Week 3: Numbers and Date
Learning Outcome:

Students will use cardinal and ordinal numbers to describe dates and times, and will be able to talk about the calendar and schedules in basic conversations.

Week 4: Daily Life and Activities
Learning Outcome:

Students will describe their daily routines, hobbies, and sports activities using appropriate vocabulary and will practice asking and answering questions about routine tasks.

Week 5: Body and Health
Learning Outcome:

Students will identify body parts, describe common health problems, discuss healthy habits, and ask about someone's health condition.

Week 6: Family and Home
Learning Outcome:

Students will talk about their family members, describe their homes, and discuss household activities and expenses in more complex sentences.

Week 7: School and Learning
Learning Outcome:

Students will use classroom English to ask and answer questions related to school supplies, places at school, and their educational experiences.

Week 8: Work and Community
Learning Outcome:

Students will describe various jobs, occupations, and workplaces, and will be able to talk about transportation and local community services using intermediate-level vocabulary.

Week 9: Money and Shopping
Learning Outcome:

Students will be able to discuss money, banking, shopping experiences, and use vocabulary related to payments, debit/credit cards, and purchasing goods.

Week 10: Food and Everyday Needs
Learning Outcome:

Students will describe different types of food, drinks, and common grocery store items, and will be able to express their preferences and ask for food recommendations.

Grammar Thursdays
Each week includes a dedicated grammar session to reinforce speaking skills with a focus on sentence structure, verb tenses, and parts of speech:

Week 1: Nouns – Names of People
Learning Outcome:

Students will identify and correctly use singular and plural nouns in sentences, constructing simple sentences to describe people and their characteristics.

Week 2: Nouns – Names of Places
Learning Outcome:

Students will distinguish between proper and common nouns and will use both types of nouns to form simple and compound sentences describing different locations.

Week 3: Nouns – Names of Things
Learning Outcome:

Students will practice using countable and uncountable nouns to form both simple and compound sentences, focusing on expressing quantities and describing objects.

Week 4: Nouns – Names of Events
Learning Outcome:

 Students will create sentences using event-related nouns and incorporate them into compound sentences to talk about plans and past events.

Week 5: Pronouns
Learning Outcome:

Students will identify and correctly use subject, object, and possessive pronouns in sentences, forming simple and compound sentences with correct pronoun usage.

Week 6: Verbs
Learning Outcome:

Students will use regular and irregular verbs in the correct tense to form simple, compound, and complex sentences to describe actions and events.

Week 7: Adverbs
Learning Outcome:

 Students will incorporate adverbs of frequency, time, and manner into simple and compound sentences, modifying verbs to enhance clarity and meaning in their speech.

Week 8: Adjectives and Opposites
Learning Outcome:

Students will use adjectives and their opposites to form compound sentences, adding descriptive detail to their speech about people, places, and things.

Week 9: Prepositions
Learning Outcome:

Students will correctly use prepositions of time and place to form simple and compound sentences, describing locations, events, and schedules.

Week 10: Conjunctions and Symbols
Learning Outcome:

Students will use coordinating, subordinating, and correlative conjunctions to form compound and complex sentences, connecting ideas and creating more advanced sentences.
